Church Staff Senior Minister
The Rev. Wilmot H. Taylor was called to Flatbush-Tompkins Congregational Church in September 2002 as senior minister and officially installed that November, after serving as the Stated Supply for almost a year. Rev. Taylor is responsible for the planning and execution of worship, does pastoral counseling and teaching, and serves as an ex-officio member of the various church boards and committees. He is the “primary shepherd, the worship leader” of Flatbush-Tompkins and looks forward to continuing the positive relationship that has developed between him and the church family, as together everyone grows in their love and service to the Lord. Before coming to Flatbush-Tompkins, Rev. Taylor was the General Superintendent of the Sunday School at the Greater Allen Cathedral of New York (formerly called Allen AME Church in Jamaica, NY). He holds a Masters of Divinity Degree from New York Theological Seminary. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Queens College, and after serving in the United States Air Force as a commissioned officer, earned a Masters of Business Administration Degree from Syracuse University. Presently bi-vocational, Wilmot is also Vice President with Morgan Stanley in the Information Technology division. Married in 1974, he and his wife, Sherry Ann, are the proud parents of two sons, Johnathan Wilmot, now living in Texas and Matthew Roland, a college student attending Howard University. As a boy growing up in New York, he was involved in church activities, attending Sunday School regularly and serving as a Junior Usher. Wilmot particularly enjoyed playing the saxophone in a combo group in Junior High School and for Sunday School programs. Maybe one day he will decide to pick up his sax again and play to the Glory of God at Flatbush-Tompkins! Organist and Choir Director Eric Birk became the organist and choir director of Flatbush-Tompkins in 1994. Previously he was the music director of the First Baptist Church of New York City from 1989 to 1994. Since beginning his music ministry at Flatbush-Tompkins, he has established three youth choirs and conducts the semi-professional Chancel Choir, guiding their unique ministry of blended music in worship. Eric is a native of Texas where he earned the Bachelor of Music degree (magna cum laude) in piano performance on a Cliburn scholarship at Baylor University. He came to New York to study with Constance Keene at the Manhattan School of Music where he completed the Master of Music degree. Mr. Birk has studied organ with Joyce Jones and Walter Hilse and is a Colleague of the American Guild of Organists. He has performed as a soloist and collaborative pianist and organist in Texas, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and the New York City area. Eric teaches private piano and organ students in Brooklyn and serves as President of the Associated Music Teachers League, and Vice-President of the NYC Chapter of the Choristers Guild.
